Earth Day

Earth Day 2020

Earth Day began as a response to oil spills, smog, and polluted rivers. On April 22, 1970, over 20 million Americans protested the crisis and demanded changes to protect the environment. This first Earth Day launched The Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts as well as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Other countries followed suit and eventually, the United Nations signed the Paris Agreement on climate change.

The theme for this 50th anniversary of Earth Day is climate action. Climate change represents the biggest challenge to the future of life on planet Earth. We all can and must be involved to make a difference. Our children’s and grandchildren’s lives depend on us.

“Earth Day 1970 was irrefutable evidence that the American people understood the environmental threat and wanted action to resolve it.” Barry Commoner

  1. Thank you, Sue. One positive from our current distancing has been pollution has decreased significantly. It would be a tremendous benefit if we continued to be respectful of our planet and never go back to our destructive ways. To this day, every time I pass a section of Beargrass Creek where it intersects Bardstown Rd, I am saddened by the thousands of plastic bags which have it totally blocked. It is wanton disregard for Nature and our very lives depend on protecting it.

  2. I agree with Pat.
I become very irritated to see how the Inhabitants living on Earth, are So selfish.

Daily, I am furious as I drive east- west 264.
Trash is piled in layers on the road.
It is not due, to lack of City and County Government, addressing the mess.
It is plain lack of character of society. It is Blatant laziness.

Every two weeks I see Workers walking the emergency lanes, attempting to pick up the garbage, that others are too lazy to keep within their vehicles. Other’s must pick up their filth!
Within 1-2 days… More filth is present again.(sometimes the same day.)

The Workers take such a chance of dying.
Some Drivers would run over them, as they attempt to keep Louisville clear of filth.
